The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has released Episode 4 of its podcast series ‘Creative Sparks: From inspiration to innovation’, focusing on the role of women in intellectual property (IP).
Titled “Women in IP: From talent to impact”, the episode explores how intellectual property can support women innovators and entrepreneurs in transforming ideas into tangible economic and social value.
The discussion features Mercedes Delgado, Professor and keynote speaker at the EUIPO International Women’s Day Conference, and Gloria Bernabeu, Equal Opportunities Officer at the EUIPO.
During the episode, the guests discuss the importance of fostering inclusive innovation ecosystems and encouraging greater participation of women across sectors such as science, technology, business and the creative industries. They also reflect on some of the challenges that women innovators may face and on the importance of policies and initiatives that promote equal opportunities.
The conversation highlights the role that intellectual property rights (including trade marks, designs and copyright) can play in enabling women to strengthen their businesses and scale their innovations.
Other topics on the table are the barriers such as limited access to funding, networks and mentorship and how they can affect women’s participation in innovation and IP systems. But also how institutions, including the EUIPO, can contribute by raising awareness, producing evidence-based research and supporting initiatives that improve inclusiveness in innovation.
Released in the context of International Women’s Day, the episode emphasises that diversity and inclusion are key drivers of innovation and competitiveness, and that empowering women in innovation benefits the wider economy and society.
