The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) today announced the granting of the first Geographical Indication for artisanal and industrial products originating in Spain to “Jewelry from Córdoba,” granting it immediate protection throughout the European Union (EU).
The EU thus recognizes the distinctive characteristics of “Jewelry from Córdoba,” based on the quality and reputation of its products, derived from the specialized knowledge perfected and passed down through generations of local producers.
This achievement highlights the enormous potential of Geographical Indications to protect and promote Spanish industry and crafts, allowing their knowledge, tradition, and know-how to gain recognition and protection throughout the European Union’s internal market.
Jewelry from Córdoba boasts a history spanning millennia. The filigree techniques used in their production were already documented in the city during the Caliphate period in the 10th century. Subsequently, local silversmiths’ guilds contributed to consolidating a craft tradition that continues to thrive through specialized workshops, training centers, and a highly developed jewelry sector. Thus, only in Córdoba can these unique and exceptional pieces be crafted.
Registration as a geographical indication at the European level provides producers with a collective industrial property right that can be enforced throughout the European Union against the misuse or imitation of the protected designation, such as infringements committed on various e-commerce platforms.
The system also benefits consumers by providing clear information about the origin and authenticity of the products. In this way, it fosters better-informed purchasing decisions and strengthens confidence in products bearing a protected designation, as it is a seal that guarantees they have been produced in a specific territory and using specific techniques.
“This registration will allow local companies to strengthen the value of their shared heritage and expertise in the European market,” stated Elisa Rodríguez, Director of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM).
Since the system was launched, the EUIPO has received 81 registration applications. This growing interest demonstrates that producers are increasingly aware of the need to protect traditional designations of origin against counterfeiting, imitation, and misuse.
